Carifesta, the Caribbean’s foremost arts festival, is being held in the South American/Caribbean nation of Guyana this summer from August 22 to 31. It goes without saying that the country has to be prepared for a massive influx of visitors from within and without the Caribbean region.
In this regard, the authorities are mindful that they have a solemn responsibility to protect the health and well being of their visitors. So they have developed an extensive plan to provide for the health care needs of patrons on a 24-hour basis at the large venues and other strategic locations where Carifesta X events will be held.
More specifically, “…the Ministry of Health has taken good care to ensure that certain vector-borne diseases are not going to be a problem during Carifesta…” This was Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy’s promise published online in Guyana News Today and reprinted in Cayman Net News.
For several weeks now, the Ministry has been conducting fogging exercises targeting disease carrying mosquitoes like Aedes aegypti, the Dengue Fever mosquito. Additionally, daily reporting to the Ministry has been mandated to keep a close tab on Dengue transmission countrywide.
A Rodent control programme is also in place.
